Ever wonder what goes on behind the scenes of a fantasy photoshoot? Join me on a journey into the creative process, from concept to final image.
Introducing the Concept:
In our collective imagination, shaped by movies and popular literature, fairies occupy a well-defined space. This shared understanding makes it effortless to convey to prospective clients what they can anticipate during their session with me. From the outset, I envisioned incorporating elements that echo the ethereal essence of fairies. The choice of attire reflects this vision, with flowy and delicate dresses evoking the grace of petals in the wind. These ensembles are adorned with intricate details such as small flowers, butterflies and vines. Delicate wings are complemented by floral crowns, serving as the perfect embodiment of the enchanting world of fairies.
Setting the Stage:
Picture our fairy's idyllic home nestled in the heart of a lush forest, adjacent to a mystical pond where moonlight dances on the water's surface. To recreate this enchanting scene, I embarked on a creative journey, fashioning rocks from paper mache and adorning them with faux foliage and moss to infuse the setting with life and magic.
Naturally, our woodland haven wouldn't be complete without the delightful company of birds chirping melodious tunes, bunnies hopping about in playful abandon, and butterflies fluttering gracefully through the air. And who could forget the endearing presence of frogs, patiently awaiting a potential kiss to break an ancient spell?
Yet, amidst this picturesque scene, one essential element remained conspicuously absent—a grand mushroom for our fairy to recline upon, its cap offering rest and reflection. Ah, but here lies the tale of the "Mushroom Drama," a saga that has unfolded in snippets across my social media feeds.
In pursuit of this elusive prop, I embarked on a quest fraught with challenges. Expensive and only made by a handful of manufacturers, I debated the purchase. After much searching, a stroke of luck led me to a holiday sale on one, which was promptly ordered in eager anticipation. However, fate had other plans, as tragedy struck—the factory producing our coveted mushroom succumbed to flames before completion.
Months passed in hopeful anticipation of the factory's revival, until the realization dawned upon me—waiting was futile. With determination fueling my resolve, I decided to fashion my own mushroom, employing spray foam and plaster as my artistic tools. There were many moments wondering if this would be a grand success or a horrible disaster.
In a testament to perseverance and the unwavering pursuit of whimsical dreams, I finally unveiled the finished product.
The Photoshoot Process:
With my enchanting stage fully set, the ambiance enhanced by the soft glow of carefully positioned lights simulating the dappled sunlight filtering through a forest canopy, the time had come to welcome our fairies. As each young girl entered the scene, a sprinkle of glitter spray transformed them into ethereal beings, their presence adding an extra layer of magic to our already enchanting scene.
Guided by our vision and the storybook album offered with each session, the girls gracefully navigated through a series of poses, seamlessly embodying the essence of our fairy tale narrative. It was remarkable to witness how effortlessly they slipped into their roles, moving with a newfound delicacy and grace, as if transported to a realm where time itself moved at a more leisurely pace. Of all the enchanting elements awaiting them, it was the towering mushroom that captured their imagination the most.
What truly delighted me, however, was observing how each girl brought her unique perspective to the scene. Some approached the props with a preconceived notion of fairy behavior, while others allowed their imaginations to soar freely, improvising their interactions with the elements around them. It was a joy to witness these young minds momentarily depart from reality, fully embracing the magic of make-believe and breathing life into my enchanted forest with their boundless creativity.
Post Production Magic:
Participants in these sessions have the option to choose between two distinct editing styles.
The first, a classic edit, enhances the scene with digital elements that imbue our lanterns with a warm radiance, cast a soft glow upon our orbs, and introduce the faint flicker of additional sprites frolicking in the air.
Alternatively, the painterly edit transports the entire composition into the realm of a storybook, infusing it with an artistic charm reminiscent of hand-painted illustrations. Each edit offers a unique interpretation of the enchanting world we've created, allowing participants to select the aesthetic that best resonates with their vision and desired narrative.
